In Srinagar, the Rajya Sabha election in Jammu and Kashmir wrapped up peacefully on Friday. A total of 86 legislators cast their votes in the Assembly complex, while detained MLA Mehraj Malik took part via postal ballot. One MLA, Sajad Lone of the Peoples Conference, chose not to vote.
The Assembly, which has 90 members, will hold by‑polls on November 11 for two vacant seats in Nagrota and Budgam after those seats went empty.
After the tally, the four Rajya Sabha seats will be announced past 4 p.m. The Awami Ittehad Party’s Khurshid Ahmad has joined the National Congress (NC) alliance, adding weight to the NC’s prospects.
NC’s 41 MLAs, together with support from six Congress members, five independents, one CPI(M) MLA, three PDP MLAs, and one AIP MLA, have a solid edge over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP can secure the final seat only if some of its supporters cross‑vote for an NC candidate.
The NC has filed nominations for the roaster: Muhammed Ramzan Chowdhary, Sajad Kichloo, Shami Oberoi, and Imran Nabi Dar. The BJP’s slate includes its Jammu and Kashmir president, Sat Sharma, among three other candidates.
If the NC fails to gather more than 28 votes for the fourth Rajya Sabha seat, the BJP, with 28 votes of its own, would have a chance to win that seat.
The 2024 Assembly election saw the NC take 42 seats, the BJP 29, Congress 6, PDP 3, CPI(M) 1, Peoples Conference 1, AIP 1, Aam Aadmi Party 1, and six independents. Five of those independents later joined the NC, while Congress supported the NC government from outside without formally joining it. This shift gives the NC a stronger footing as the Rajya Sabha election proceeds.
