PM Modi Votes in Vice Presidential Election at New Parliament Building
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped out to vote in the high-stakes Vice Presidential election today at the New Parliament Building in New Delhi. The event kicked off on Tuesday, September 9, drawing attention from across the political spectrum.
Right after casting his vote, PM Modi shared a quick update on social media platform X, saying, "Voted in the 2025 Vice President election." His post highlighted the importance of this key democratic process.
Other leaders from the NDA alliance and the opposition INDIA bloc also showed up to vote. The contest pits NDA’s nominee, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, against the INDIA bloc’s pick, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy. This Vice Presidential election promises a fierce battle between the two major political groups.
To keep things fair and private, election officials handed out identical pens to all parliamentarians. Even veteran leader and Rajya Sabha member H.D. Deve Gowda arrived in a wheelchair to exercise his voting rights, showing the commitment of seasoned politicians to the process.
Vote counting for the Vice Presidential election starts later today, with results expected soon after. This election carries huge political weight because the Vice President also chairs the Rajya Sabha, playing a vital role in how Parliament runs smoothly.
Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, along with Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, serve as the official election agents overseeing the smooth conduct of the voting.
The electoral college includes 781 members in total—542 elected Lok Sabha members and 239 Rajya Sabha members (that’s 233 elected plus 12 nominated, with six vacancies in both houses). Every vote counts equally in this secret ballot system, following standard parliamentary rules. A candidate needs at least 391 votes to clinch the Vice President post.
The position became vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down as Vice President on July 21 due to health issues, right at the start of Parliament’s monsoon session. Now, with NDA holding a numerical edge in the combined strength of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, experts predict an advantage for their candidate in this Vice Presidential poll.
Still, political watchers are glued to the developments, especially any signs of cross-voting that could shake things up. The results this evening could reshape the upper house’s leadership and influence key decisions in Indian politics. Stay tuned for updates on this crucial Vice President election 2025!
