New Delhi, Oct 22 – The Indian infantry is turning into a high‑tech, self‑sufficient and nimble force that fits India’s 2047 “Viksit Bharat” vision, said Lt Gen Ajay Kumar, the Army’s Director General of Infantry, during a relaxed briefing with reporters. “We don’t win wars with borrowed weapons,” he emphasized.
Kumar underlined that the infantry remains the frontline of the Army. Under the Decade of Transformation, the service is focused on modernising, building self‑reliance and sharpening its people skills. “The infantry of tomorrow will be modular, versatile and tech‑savvy, ready for battles across land, sea, air and cyber,” he said.
Celebrating Shaurya Diwas on Oct 27 – the new name for what was once Infantry Day – Kumar recalled the historic 1947 landing of 1 SIKH Regiment in Srinagar that kept Jammu and Kashmir secure. “Shaurya Diwas honours the bravery and spirit of today’s infantry while linking to that proud past,” he added.
The commander pointed to lessons from Operation Sindoor, stressing the need for precision, teamwork and tech‑led fighting. He highlighted how better intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) helps units hit targets more accurately. “We’re moving to non‑contact, tech‑enabled warfare – drones, AI and precision weapons are reshaping the battlefield,” he said.
Every infantry battalion now has a dedicated drone platoon that boosts surveillance and allows first‑person‑view (FPV) strikes. New Bhairav battalions provide high‑mobility, high‑intensity capability, bridging infantry and special‑forces roles.
The overhaul rests on six pillars – lethality, mobility, communication, battlefield transparency, survivability and training – all driven by indigenous tech. Soldiers are already using advanced 7.62‑mm rifles, fifth‑generation anti‑tank launchers, SDR‑based encrypted radios and AI‑enabled networks.
Kumar stressed that India’s “Atmanirbhar” defence ecosystem, built on partnerships with industry, DRDO and universities, guarantees that wars are not fought with borrowed weapons.
