Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal praised the strong bond between India and the European Union on Friday, calling it a partnership built on trust and mutual support rather than rivalry. Speaking at the ACMA 65th Annual Session in New Delhi, Goyal highlighted the ongoing talks for an India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), saying both sides truly complement each other.
He echoed EU President Ursula von der Leyen’s words: “In an era of conflicts and intense competition, you need trusted friends. For Europe, India is such a friend.” Goyal added, “We complement each other, we do not compete with each other. It’s crucial to expand trade between India and Europe, but we should also think about the bigger global impact.”
Goyal emphasized how India’s 1.4 billion people see Europe as a reliable partner, sharing values like fair play, rule of law, high-quality standards, sustainability, and inclusive growth—principles close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. “I assure you, my colleagues, the government, business community, and all 1.4 billion Indians view Europe as a friend, strategic ally, and partner in these ideals,” he said.
The minister stressed that real progress in negotiations happens between trusted friends. Both India and the EU aim for the best deals, but they’re committed to a win-win outcome. “We’ll keep working toward tangible results that benefit both sides,” Goyal noted.
Looking ahead, Goyal said the India-EU partnership could set a global example in geopolitics and open doors for other nations. Quoting PM Modi, he added, “Our partnership with Europe is based on shared values and a vision for a better world. It’s not just about us—it’s about creating opportunities worldwide. Europe’s tech and innovation can reach global markets through collaboration with India.”
Goyal made it clear: India wants a robust, fair, equitable, and balanced Free Trade Agreement with the EU to boost ties. Meanwhile, European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen arrived in India on September 12 for a two-day visit to lead the FTA negotiations. This move signals fresh momentum in India-EU trade relations.
