In Chandigarh, the family of former IPS officer Y Puran Kumar says justice has yet to be served after the senior police officer died by suicide at his home on October 7.
His brother, Amit Rattan, told reporters on Saturday that the case is still ongoing and that a high‑ranking officer’s death deserves a full investigation. “It’s been five days and we have not yet seen justice,” he added.
Earlier in the week, a delegation of the Indian National Congress—including Member of Parliament Deepender Singh Hooda and leader Randeep Singh Surjewala—paid a visit to the officer’s residence. They expressed solidarity with the family and stood in support of a thorough probe.
The Chandigarh Police announced today that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will look into the circumstances surrounding Y Puran Kumar’s death. The SIT, supervised by Inspector General Pushpendra Kumar, will investigate the case registered under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The six‑member team is composed of:
– IGP Pushpendra Kumar (team leader)
– SSP Kanwardeep Kaur
– SPICity KM Priyanka
– DSP Traffic Charanyit Singh Vik
– SOPO South Queens Kaur
– SHO PS‑11 (West) Jarveer Singh Rana
The officers may bring in additional experts as needed to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and produce a final report.
The Haryana IAS Officers Association also expressed sorrow for the sudden loss of the officer. It praised Y Puran Kumar’s integrity and dedication to public service.
The SIT is expected to begin work immediately and aim for a swift, transparent conclusion to the case.
