Chennai, Oct 18 – The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai says the northeast monsoon is turning into a rain‑storm for most of Tamil Nadu.
Heavy showers are expected in nine districts, including Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, and Tiruppur, as well as Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, and Karur.
Saturday’s forecast
Satellites and radar show that western and southern districts will get moderate to heavy rainfall. Residents should be ready for heavy downpours at isolated spots in each district.
Sunday outlook
Sunday will bring more rain – especially in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Theni and Tenkasi. Thunder and lightning are likely in some areas, so stay indoors if the sky lights up.
Top rain‑tracker
In the 24 hours before 8:30 a.m. Friday, Tirunelveli saw the strongest drop in the state. Nalumukku hit 16 cm (63 inches), followed by Oothu at 15 cm and Kakachi at 14 cm. A few places in the district collected 8–11 cm.
What this means
The heavy rainfall finally greases the dry soils in southern Tamil Nadu. The long, steady showers in hilly zones raise the risk of landslides and waterlogging. Nilgiris officials are on high alert, monitoring dangerous slopes and low‑lying villages.
Chennai weather
In Chennai and its suburbs, the sky will stay partly cloudy. Light to moderate rain, plus thunder and lightning, are expected. Evening coastal winds from the east will bring extra moisture, boosting rainfall chances in the region.
Safety tips
• Keep an eye on trusted weather alerts.
• Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy showers.
• Fishermen should steer clear of coastal waters, as rough seas will hit the western and southern coasts.
Stay safe, and keep your umbrellas ready as the monsoon delivers the much‑needed water to Tamil Nadu.
