Chennai, Oct 21 – The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain across many parts of Tamil Nadu. A low‑pressure system is brewing over the southeast Bay of Bengal and is expected to drive strong storms between now and Oct 24.

The RMC says a low‑pressure area is already over the southeast Arabian Sea, while upper‑air winds swirl over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining Bay of Bengal. The system should intensify within the next 24 hours, move toward the west‑northwest, and grow stronger over the southwest and west‑central Bay in the next 48 hours.

For Oct 21, the orange alert covers seven districts: Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Cuddalore. Residents in these areas should expect extremely heavy rain starting Monday, possibly with thunderstorms.

Heavy showers also loom for Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Sivaganga.

Tomorrow’s outlook

On Oct 22, the orange alert extends to Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai. Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Tirupattur will face heavy rain. By Oct 23, very heavy rainfall is expected in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, and Vellore, while Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Tirupattur may see heavy showers.

Beyond the week

On Oct 24, districts such as Tirupattur, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri could see intense rainfall.

In Chennai, clouds will dominate the sky with a chance of moderate to heavy rain and occasional thunderstorms. Flood‑prone areas in northern Tamil Nadu and the Delta face continuous downpours that could lead to waterlogged streets.

What residents should do

People living in low‑lying neighbourhoods should stay alert and avoid flooded zones. Keep an eye on local advisories and have a plan in case the heavy rain turns into fast‑moving floods. Stay tuned to RMC updates for real‑time weather information.
