The district court in Chinsurah, Hooghly, handed down a life sentence to a couple on Tuesday for the murder of a young man over a disputed Rs 100.
The judgment followed a six‑year investigation that began when 23‑year‑old Mohammad Anwar was found dead in a pool of blood outside a shop in Kantapukur, Mogra, on 7 June 2019. His body, located during a routine police patrol, was taken to Mogra Rural Hospital where doctors confirmed the death.
The next day, Anwar’s maternal uncle, Ranjit Sau, lodged a murder complaint with the local police post, naming Krishna Baul Das and Lakshmi Roy as suspects. An eyewitness later reported seeing the young man arguing with the couple, prompting police to detain them and file the charge sheet.
The prosecution, led by Subrata Bhattacharya, called 24 witnesses. Police said Lakshmi had been receiving Rs 100 from Anwar, and a disagreement over the delay of payment escalated. According to investigators, Krishna struck Anwar on the head with a brick, after which both fled, leaving the victim on the curb. They were apprehended subsequently.
Judge Sanjay Kumar Sharma, an Additional District and Sessions Judge, delivered the verdict: life imprisonment for both, a fine of Rs 5,000, and an additional Rs 2 lakh in compensation for the victim’s mother. The family expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision.
