In a powerful move against child abuse, a fast-track court in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district handed down a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence on Saturday to a man who raped his own minor daughter multiple times in 2023. The court also fined the convict Rs 10,000, with an extra two months in jail if he doesn’t pay up.
The shocking case came to light when the young victim, from the Shamuktala area in Alipurduar, bravely filed a police complaint in January 2023. She told officers that after her mother’s death a few months earlier, she and her father moved back to their ancestral home. That’s when he first assaulted her, and the rapes continued several more times.
At first, the girl kept quiet out of fear, but she soon mustered the courage to report her father to local police. Officers quickly arrested him and launched an investigation. They uncovered that he had physically abused his late wife too. By later that year, police filed charges against him in the Alipurduar fast-track court, kicking off the trial.
The court heard testimony from 15 witnesses, leading to the man’s conviction. Beyond the prison term, judges ordered the West Bengal government to provide Rs 3 lakh in compensation to the survivor, offering some support for her recovery.
This ruling highlights the ongoing fight against rape cases in West Bengal, where reports of brutal assaults—especially on minors—have grabbed national attention over the past year. One of the most horrific examples was the 2023 rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, sparking widespread protests and demands for justice. Cases like these underscore the urgent need for stronger protections for women and children across India.
