Police in West Bengal warn women about fake profiles on online matrimonial sites after a major cyber‑fraud ring was shut down in Hooghly district.

The Hooghly Rural Police say a gang used false identities, emotional manipulation and promises of marriage to trick at least 20 women out of a total of about ₹3 crore (roughly $350,000). The scam worked by creating fake profiles that looked like wealthy and respectable men, using stolen photos and videos of South‑Indian models.

A 29‑year‑old woman from Singur filed a complaint after she met a man named Anupam Roy on a matrimonial site. He claimed to be a mill owner from Burdwan, lived alone after his parents died, and said his bank account was blocked because of tax problems. She and her family sent money to the account, trusting the story. When the man stopped answering video calls and kept asking for more money, the woman grew suspicious and turned to the police.

Cyber detectives in Hooghly found that Anupam’s profile had disappeared and his phone was unreachable. They traced a chain of three arrests: model Abhishek Roy on July 3, Zahir Abbas on July 10, and the gang’s leader, Jamir Abbas, on October 14. Abbas was found hiding at a resort in Mandarmani.

Police said the network behind the scam operated in several cities, including Burdwan, Howrah, Tarakeswar and even Delhi. The total haul was nearly ₹3 crore, affecting about 20 young women.

“Women using matrimonial sites should be careful before falling in love,” the officers warned. “Never send money without verification, and report any suspicious calls or demands.”

The police urge people to verify profiles, avoid sharing bank details over chat, and always use secure, reputable matrimonial platforms. The closer community and law‑enforcement are persuaded to stay vigilant against online romance scams.
