West Bengal police say they have arrested three suspects in a gang‑rape case involving a second‑year medical student from Odisha. The incident took place in Durgapur, near Asansol, this week.
The student, whose name has not been released, was allegedly taken out of the campus by a classmate to get a meal. Between 8:00 and 9:00 PM, two or three men joined them. The classmate fled, and the student was assaulted. She later broke down in front of her classmates and a friend sent a frantic call to her father.
The father, who said the student lives in Jaleswar, Odisha, told reporters that the campus security was inadequate. “No action was taken. No system, no response,” he said. He added that the event was “highly condemnable and painful.”
West Bengal’s Deputy Magistrate and SDO, Ranjana Roy, confirmed on Saturday that the student is in stable condition and that her mother has been brought to the hospital. She assured the media that the victim is receiving full support and that authorities are taking action.
Locally, the Durgapur Police Commissionerate announced the arrests and said the suspects were taken into custody after a thorough investigation. The three accused are currently being held in Durgapur.
The incident drew national attention. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the violence and urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure a strict legal response. In a post on X, he said, “I have instructed senior officials to contact the West Bengal government and take necessary steps. All possible assistance will be provided to the victim’s family.”
The police and local officials said they are cooperating with investigators from both states to bring the perpetrators to justice. The case remains under active scrutiny.
