Three people accused of gang‑raping a medical student in Durgapur, West Bengal, were brought before the court on Sunday.
Police say the investigation is proceeding as planned.
“Asansol‑Durgapur Police Commissionerate’s DCP Abhishek Gupta told reporters, ‘We have arrested three persons so far and sent them to court today. The investigation is ongoing and everything is being done according to protocol,’” he said.
The victim, a second‑year medical student from a private college, is a girl from Jaleswar in Odisha. Her father explained how the tragedy happened. “My daughter left the hostel with a classmate to get a snack. Suddenly two or three men appeared and attacked her. The classmate ran away,” he said. He added that he was shocked when a friend called at 10 p.m. to tell him the assault had taken place between 8 and 9 p.m. He accused the campus of poor security and said no action had been taken so far.
The case has drawn national attention. Odisha’s Congress leader, Bhakta Charan Das, condemned the incident and urged the West Bengal government to deliver swift justice. “I strongly condemn this crime and demand immediate action from the West Bengal government,” Das told reporters. “The Odisha government must discuss this matter urgently with West Bengal.”
The court hearing is just the first step. Police investigators will continue to gather evidence and build the case against the suspects. The case highlights ongoing concerns about campus safety and the speedy delivery of justice for sexual assault victims in India.
