Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has warmly welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state, calling it a big step toward peace and steady growth. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Singh shared his excitement: “A heartfelt welcome to Manipur, Adarniya Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi Ji. The people of Manipur hold a sincere hope that this moment will lead us to peace and lasting progress. Together we look ahead with trust that tomorrow will be safer, stronger, and more prosperous.”
This visit comes amid ongoing challenges in Manipur, including ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities that erupted on May 3, 2023. These tensions have hurt the state’s economy, broken social ties, and shaken its politics. But PM Modi’s trip focuses on rebuilding through development.
Before arriving, PM Modi posted on X about his plans: “I will be attending programmes in Churachandpur and Imphal tomorrow, 13th September. We are fully committed to furthering inclusive and all-round development of Manipur.” He highlighted key projects, like laying foundation stones for road works, National Highway initiatives, women’s hostels, and more. Inaugurations include the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri, the IT SEZ Building, the New Police Headquarters at the same spot, and a special all-women market across districts.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Modi kicked off several big-ticket projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore in Churachandpur. Highlights include the Manipur Urban Roads, drainage, and asset management improvement project valued at more than Rs 3,600 crore; five National Highway projects costing over Rs 2,500 crore; the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project; and working women’s hostels at nine locations.
In Imphal, he inaugurated developments worth more than Rs 1,200 crore. These cover the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri, IT SEZ Building and New Police Headquarters there, Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata, plus Ima Markets—a unique all-women market—in four districts.
Manipur’s development projects aim to boost infrastructure, empower women, and drive tech growth, offering hope for a brighter future despite the ethnic conflicts. The Central government’s push for inclusive progress could help heal divides and spark economic recovery in the Northeast state.
