Wolf Scare Grips Bahraich Villages in Uttar Pradesh: Authorities Launch Major Hunt
Villages in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, are on high alert once again as reports of a possible man-eating wolf spark fear among residents. Conservation experts have spotted signs like a clear wolf photo, fresh footprints, and wound samples from attacks, even though no solid video proof has surfaced yet. This has prompted a full-scale operation to track and capture the animal.
"We’ve scanned the area with thermal drones, but nothing showed up in the footage," said Dr. Sammaran, a key official involved. "However, a villager snapped a photo of a wolf at 10:30 a.m. in one village and shared it with us. We’ve also found footprints and collected wound samples for testing at the Wildlife Institute of India. Wolves have attacked here twice before, so our team of 12 is patrolling day and night."
Forest teams led by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) in Gonda are keeping a close watch, especially after dark. They’re urging villagers to stay alert and report any wolf sightings immediately. To ramp up safety, officials have set up trap cameras, CCTV, and cages across the area. A dedicated control room now operates in the village, with nearly 70 personnel on the ground and over 100 more helping out. The administration has even flagged issues like poor outdoor lighting to the District Magistrate and Chief Development Officer for quick fixes.
Dr. Sammaran points out that monsoon season plays a big role in these wolf encounters. "Rising river levels flood the banks from July to September, turning grasslands into hunting grounds and pushing prey—and wolves—closer to human homes," he explained. This time of year has seen more wolf attacks in recent years, making everyone extra cautious.
This isn’t the first time Bahraich has faced such a threat. Earlier, a pack of wolves in Mahsi Tehsil terrorized villages, linked to at least 10 deaths—mostly children—and over 30 injuries. Authorities kicked off ‘Operation Bhediya’ to hunt them down, as attacks often happened at night when families slept outside due to humidity and lack of proper shelter.
In a fresh incident, a 12-year-old boy suffered serious injuries in Kharmariya Hardo Patti village, reigniting demands for better lighting, night patrols, and awareness drives. While hard evidence for this latest wolf remains tricky to pin down, the response is swift and proactive.
Officials are advising villagers to take simple steps: Avoid going out at night, secure your homes with strong doors, keep kids inside, and alert forest teams to any new signs like tracks or howls. Drawing from past wolf attacks in Bahraich, this operation shows how lessons learned are saving lives today. Stay safe, and keep an eye on updates as the search continues.
