In Kolkata today, police shut down a weapons plot in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
The arrest took place near the Raghunathganj police station, close to the Farakka-bound bus stop in Umarpur. Officers seized five semi‑automatic 7 mm pistols and 24 rounds of ammunition from a bag carried by the suspect, identified as 32‑year‑old Sadhana Halder.
Halder, whose house sits in Krishnapur village under the Lalgola police station, was allegedly planning to pick up the guns from the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) area in Farakka and move them to the Sagarpara area of Murshidabad. Law‑enforcement officials had been tipped off to her movements and surrounded her while she switched cars. When she tried to jump into another vehicle, officers stopped her and recovered the weapons.
“Thanks to the tip‑off, we intercepted her before she could smuggle the arms,” said a senior Jangipur police officer. “We’re now filing a charge sheet under the Arms Act and are probing whether she works with a smuggling network.”
Acting on the evidence, the police will present Halder before the Jangipur court on Monday. Investigators are also looking into any accomplices who may have helped her plan the smuggling scheme.
The Raghunathganj police highlighted the find as a major win, noting that arms trafficking rumors have been growing across the state as the 2026 assembly elections approach. The captured firearms underscore the continuing threat of illicit arms movements in West Bengal.
