Mumbai – On Saturday, resident doctors at Mumbai’s KEM Hospital, led by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), staged a protest after a 26‑year‑old female doctor in Satara died by suicide. The doctor had claimed she was raped four times by a police officer and was forced by an MP’s aides to issue false medical certificates for suspects in police custody.
More than 8,000 residents marched through the hospital corridors wearing black armbands. They demanded a swift investigation and the arrest of the accused. “We are keeping doors open for patients,” said resident doctor Sameer Warge. “If our demands are ignored, we will shut down.” He called for a CID or Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and a functioning POSH committee to keep workplace safety real.
Female doctors at KEM said they feel unsafe. “He repeatedly tried to silence us,” one protester said. “She told us no one listened. Now she’s gone.” Another doctor added that the doctor’s suicide note lay out the abuse: the police officer’s assault, mental and physical torment, and pressure from an MP to falsify fitness certificates for accused men. The note also mentioned a Member of Parliament’s personal assistants were involved.
The doctor from Beed district had worked at Satara’s Phaltan sub‑district hospital for 23 months, almost finishing her rural posting when she ended her life. In the four‑page note, she blamed Sub‑Inspector Gopal Badne for rape and Prashant Bankar for torture over several months.
The protests march on. Doctors insist they need a transparent, time‑bound investigation and that a POSH act implementation register must give them security. They say if nothing changes, future operations at hospitals could be halted. The case has drawn nationwide attention to sexual abuse and workplace intimidation in Indian healthcare.
