Women in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, kicked off Dusshera celebrations with a vibrant Sindoor Khela ritual on Thursday, smearing vermillion on each other in front of the Durga idol. The event unfolded at the Siddhiwala Bus Library Association, where participants bid a joyful farewell to the goddess after her 10-day visit, symbolizing her return to her divine home.
This year, the association marks its centenary, and the tradition of Sindoor Khela holds special meaning for the community. Women from the Bengali community, along with others, joined in the sacred play, applying sindoor to honor married women and seek blessings from the mother goddess.
One devotee, Tanushree, shared her heartfelt wish during the farewell. “It’s the day to say goodbye to our mother goddess with happiness. We hope she returns next year,” she told . “We celebrate with so much joy and pomp.”
First-timers like Ritu Jangde couldn’t hide their excitement. “We’re not Bengali, but we loved taking part in this Sindoor Khela,” she said. “It was an amazing experience.”
Neha Gupta echoed the sentiment. “This is our first time joining this Bengali tradition, and we’re thrilled,” she added. “We’re sending off the mother goddess with smiles, praying she comes back with her blessings next year.”
Usni Pal explained the ritual’s significance. “Sindoor Khela lets the mother goddess bless all married women before she leaves,” she told .
Meanwhile, across the country in Jaisalmer, soldiers from the Border Security Force’s 1055 Artillery Regiment honored Vijayadashmi with a traditional Shastra Pooja. They worshipped their weapons, including those from Operation Sindoor, by offering flowers and chanting Shakti mantras, treating the firearms like sacred deities.
