Prime Minister Narendra Modi took sharp aim at the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) during a speech in Bihar, highlighting how the party’s past rule brought lawlessness and corruption that hit women the hardest.
Speaking at the launch of the Bihar Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojana scheme on Friday, Modi praised the “double-engine government”—a nod to the BJP-led central and state administrations—for boosting women’s lives through better infrastructure. “Under the RJD government, women faced the worst of the chaos and graft,” Modi said. “Back then, Bihar’s roads were a mess with no bridges in sight, leaving pregnant women unable to reach hospitals on time.”
Modi stressed that his government stepped in to change that. “We’ve built strong roads across Bihar to pull families out of those tough times,” he added.
He also called out the rampant Naxalite violence during RJD’s era, crediting Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for bringing back the rule of law. Modi pointed to an ongoing exhibition of old newspapers in the state, saying younger folks under 30 might not grasp the fear that gripped Bihar. “Elders remember the terror—Naxalites struck everywhere, from poor homes to those of doctors and IAS officers. RJD leaders’ atrocities spared no one, and women suffered most. Now, under Nitish Kumar’s leadership, Bihar’s daughters can step out safely. That freedom wasn’t possible before.”
In a subtle dig at the Congress party, Modi referenced former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s famous line about corruption. “All this talk of looting these days reminds me of when a PM said only 15 paise out of every rupee sent from Delhi actually reached people,” he noted. “That stolen money hurt you deeply. Today, we’re sending funds straight to your bank accounts—no middlemen.”
Earlier in the event, Modi kicked off the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, a women empowerment initiative in Bihar. He directly transferred Rs 10,000 each to the accounts of 75 lakh women across the state, amounting to Rs 7,500 crore in total aid.
