Jaipur – The Rajasthan High Court has issued a stern warning to the state government over the crumbling state of school buildings across the state. The court acted after a tragic collapse in a Jhalawar school that killed students. It said the government’s paperwork must be backed up by real, visible repairs.
A two‑judge bench, led by Justice Mahendra Goel and Justice Ashok Kumar Jain, questioned how a repair budget of only ₹5 lakh can fix the most damaged schools. The bench pointed out that spending this amount just on white‑washing is inadequate and that the money was allocated without a proper inspection.
Advocate General Rajendra Prasad filed an affidavit, saying that ₹5 lakh has been set aside for the worst‑condition schools, with work to finish by March 2026. All other schools would be repaired by November 2026. He added that 11.46 percent of the total education budget is earmarked for infrastructure upgrades and offered to raise the budget if needed. The court urged the government to shift inspections from the Public Works Department (PWD) to an independent agency because of repeated contractor problems.
“The work is discussed, but nothing is visible on the ground. Students are still learning under tin sheds,” the bench said. It also ordered a grading system for every school in the state so repairs are prioritized and organized.
The High Court told the government to submit a full action plan by October 31, listing timelines, budgets and monitoring procedures. The government will have more central funding in November and will present a detailed roadmap then. The court will hear the case again on October 31 and will keep a close eye on progress, saying student safety tops every priority.
This case highlights the urgent need for stronger oversight and funding for school infrastructure so that children can learn in safe, well‑maintained buildings.
