Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted efforts to boost women’s prosperity and self-respect in Bihar during a virtual address on Friday. Speaking to a large gathering, he launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojana scheme, a key initiative for women’s empowerment in the state.

In a major step, Modi directly transferred Rs 10,000 to the bank accounts of 75 lakh women across Bihar, amounting to Rs 7,500 crore. This direct benefit transfer aims to spark self-employment opportunities and help women build financial independence.

Modi encouraged the women, saying they could use the funds to start small businesses, such as shops selling utensils, cosmetics, toys, or stationery, or even dive into animal husbandry. “A brother feels joy when his sister is healthy, happy, and her family stands strong financially,” he shared. “Today, your brothers Narendra and Nitish are committed to your service, prosperity, and self-respect.”

The launch coincides with the Navratri festival, and Modi expressed gratitude for the support from Bihar’s women. “I’ve had the privilege to share in the happiness of Bihar Nari Shakti,” he added. So far, 75 lakh women have joined the scheme, receiving their initial payments right away.

Modi praised the PM Jan Dhan Yojana for making this possible, noting that the program opened over 30 crore bank accounts nationwide in the past decade. Without it, he said, transferring funds directly to women’s accounts wouldn’t have been feasible. He took a subtle dig at past governments, recalling how a former prime minister once claimed only 15 paise of every rupee sent from Delhi reached the people due to corruption. “That money used to get looted along the way, denying you justice,” Modi remarked. “Now, it goes straight to your accounts.”

Under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, women get an initial Rs 10,000 grant through direct benefit transfer. They can access up to Rs 2 lakh more in later phases to support ventures in agriculture, animal husbandry, handicrafts, tailoring, weaving, or other small businesses. This push for women’s self-employment in Bihar underscores the central and state governments’ focus on gender equality and economic growth.
