In Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, locals and pilgrims kicked off World Tourism Day with a lively Heritage Walk on Saturday. The event spotlighted the ancient path to the sacred Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, a route devotees have trekked for centuries.
SDM Piyush Dhotra flagged off the walk amid cheers from officials, residents, and visitors. As participants strolled the historic trail, they celebrated its deep spiritual roots, rich cultural ties, and timeless heritage value.
Dhotra shared his excitement, saying the walk aims to spark fresh interest in this old path while pushing for sustainable tourism that honors the region’s legacy. Local traders and residents cheered the idea, hoping it draws more crowds and revives the town’s economy.
World Tourism Day brings global festivities, and India joined in with enthusiasm. In Mumbai, the Ministry of Tourism teamed up with students, community members, and staff for a Swachhata Abhiyan—a cleanliness drive—at Dadar Beach.
Regional Director Mohammad Farooq led the group in a pledge to keep spaces spotless, stressing that everyone plays a key role in protecting the environment. Kids and locals pitched in, calling for year-round efforts to build better civic habits. The event showed how teamwork and personal steps can create a cleaner India.
On a bigger scale, India’s Ministry of Tourism marked World Tourism Day 2025 under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” Top leaders gathered to discuss how tourism fuels cultural swaps, economic boosts, and eco-friendly growth.
Suman Bery, Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, joined as chief guest. Minister of State Suresh Gopi oversaw the proceedings, while Additional Secretary Suman Billa gave a warm welcome. Echoing the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s focus, the day highlighted tourism’s power in India’s push toward Viksit Bharat 2047—a developed nation by 2047.
The celebrations reinforced India’s drive to turn tourism into a force for sustainability, inclusion, and prosperity, blending innovation with community-focused progress on the global stage.
