Madhya Pradesh CM Blames Congress Policies for Cotton Farmers’ Struggles and Mill Closures
In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has pointed fingers at past Congress governments for the tough times faced by cotton farmers in the state. He says their wrong policies drove up production costs and led to big losses, forcing many farmers to ditch cotton farming altogether.
This shift hit hard, as one cotton mill after another shut down across Madhya Pradesh. "Those faulty policies under Congress rule caused cotton mills to close one by one," CM Yadav stated. "It left lakhs of mill workers without jobs. But now, the new MP MITRA Park in Dhar brings fresh hope to revive our cotton industry."
The CM highlighted how the upcoming Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park will transform things. Once it starts operations, over six lakh cotton farmers in districts like Ujjain, Indore, Gwalior, Ratlam, and others will see real benefits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this India’s first PM MITRA Park during his visit to Dhar on Wednesday.
CM Yadav is optimistic that better returns for cotton will encourage farmers growing other crops to switch over. "This will make Madhya Pradesh self-reliant in the cotton sector," he added.
The damage from the past is clear. In the Malwa region, major mills like Hukumchand Mill in Indore and Binod Mill in Ujjain shut down in 1991, throwing thousands of workers into unemployment and wage battles that dragged on for years. Gwalior’s iconic J.C. Mills, set up in 1921 and employing over 16,000 people, also closed its doors.
Even today, disputes between mill owners and workers linger in the Madhya Pradesh High Court, with the state government involved since it owns the land given to these mills. Last November, CM Yadav promised to push the court for resolutions on all mill-related cases. In fact, the government has already reclaimed land in some instances.
This new push for the cotton industry in Madhya Pradesh could mark a turning point for farmers and workers alike, breathing new life into a once-thriving sector.
