Yamuna River Water Level Drops in Delhi, Bringing Relief from Floods

The Yamuna River in Delhi is finally giving residents a breather as its water level keeps falling. On Sunday, the level at the Old Railway Bridge in north Delhi dropped to 205.47 metres by 3 p.m. Experts from the Central Water Commission (CWC) predict it will go down even further to 205.35 metres by 8 p.m. – that’s just above the danger mark of 205.33 metres. After days of the river surging past the 207-metre mark, this decline signals the end of the worst Yamuna floods in the national capital.

Delhi also saw some good news on the weather front. The city got a break from the heavy rains, with only 7.4 mm of rainfall recorded until 8:30 a.m. on Sunday from the previous day. This lighter rain has helped ease the flood situation across the city.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been on top of things, closely monitoring the Yamuna flood updates and the overall relief efforts. She even announced Rs 5 crore in aid from the Delhi government to help flood victims in Punjab. During a review of Delhi’s flood measures, she shared her thoughts: "I pray to God that everyone gets relief from this crisis soon. On behalf of the Delhi Government, we are announcing assistance of Rs 5 crore to the Punjab CM Relief Fund."

Gupta also talked about sending relief supplies to Punjab, where floods have hit hard. She added, "We hope Punjab overcomes these difficult circumstances quickly so that its citizens can return to their homes, families, and normal lives. I have personally spoken to the Punjab Chief Minister and assured him that if any further assistance is required, we are ready to help." Trucks loaded with flood relief materials are set to head out soon, showing Delhi’s solidarity with its neighbor.

The Yamuna floods have affected more than 18,000 people in Delhi, forcing the government to set up 38 relief camps. Officials say nearly 5,000 folks got evacuated by boat in the East District alone. To speed up rescues, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are actively working in the worst-hit areas, pulling people from low-lying spots.

Chief Minister Gupta urged everyone to stay calm and ignore rumours about the floods. "The government, administration, NDRF, public representatives, civic bodies, and social organisations are all teaming up to tackle this challenge," she said. "The situation will be under full control very soon." With the water levels receding, Delhi’s flood relief efforts are gaining momentum, and life should start getting back to normal.
