Yogi Adityanath on action taken after stone-pelting incident in Bareilly

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath made strong remarks on Saturday about recent violence in Bareilly, vowing that his government won’t tolerate any attempts to disrupt law and order. Speaking at the Times of India Developed Uttar Pradesh Vision @2047 event in Lucknow, he took aim at those trying to block the system, clearly referencing a stone-pelting clash the day before.

Yogi didn’t name anyone directly, but his comments pointed to Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, the cleric arrested as the main suspect behind the unrest. “Some people just can’t shake their bad habits,” Yogi said. “We have to give them a proper ‘denting and painting’—a firm lesson to set them straight.” He added that the Maulana seemed to forget who’s in charge in Uttar Pradesh now, thinking he could threaten people and clog roads. “We’ll make sure your future generations forget about rioting,” Yogi warned.

The Bareilly incident unfolded on Friday after afternoon prayers. Protesters gathered outside the Ala Hazrat Dargah and Maulana Tauqeer Raza’s residence, waving placards with “I Love Mohammad” messages as part of a campaign. Things turned violent when a crowd started stone-pelting police during a march attempt. Officers responded with a lathi charge and a flag march to enforce restrictions under Section 163, dispersing most of the 80-90 people. But a smaller group pushed toward Islamia Inter College, leading to clashes.

At least 10 police officers suffered injuries from stones and even some firing, according to Uttar Pradesh Deputy Inspector General Ajay Kumar Sahni. He confirmed Maulana Tauqeer Raza’s arrest and judicial custody, along with 39 other suspects identified. Police have filed 10 FIRs in connection with the Bareilly violence.

Yogi used the moment to blast the Samajwadi Party, accusing them of letting chaos rule before 2017. “Back then, festivals meant violence, jams, and curfews,” he said. “But since 2017, we’ve kept curfews at bay and handled troublemakers in a language they understand—with punishment.” He credited strict law and order for kickstarting Uttar Pradesh’s growth story, turning the state from a “bimar” (sick) economy into a revenue surplus powerhouse.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Yogi highlighted how Uttar Pradesh shed its BIMARU label. “We now have a revenue surplus of Rs 70,000 crore—up from Rs 37,000 crore two years ago, per CAG reports,” he noted. The state, home to 25 crore people, is now fulfilling big dreams without roadblocks. Yogi criticized family and caste-based politics for past failures, saying those who incite divisions deserve the “bulldozer” treatment to clear out corruption and anarchy.

Looking back at history, Yogi reminded the audience of India’s glory. In ancient times, under rulers like Chandragupta Maurya, the country held 40% of the world economy. But foreign rule drained resources, polluting agriculture with chemicals and looting industries. “They made themselves rich by robbing us,” he said. Today, as India rises, Uttar Pradesh can’t lag behind—it’s the government’s job to meet people’s aspirations, which they’ve done for over eight years.

In a separate speech in Shravasti, Yogi doubled down on security. “We respect everyone and provide protection, but if anyone tampers with peace, attacks innocents, or stirs trouble on streets during festivals, they’ll pay a heavy price,” he declared. “Anarchy has no place here—such actions will set an example for generations.” His words underscore Uttar Pradesh’s push for stability amid growing development.
