Yogi Adityanath Orders Review Petition Against Supreme Court TET Mandate for UP Teachers
In a bold move to support experienced teachers, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed the Education Department to challenge the Supreme Court’s recent order on the mandatory Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). This directive aims to protect serving teachers from losing their jobs due to the new rule.
The Chief Minister’s Office shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Yogi Adityanath wants the department to file a revision petition against the Supreme Court ruling. The post highlighted that UP’s teachers bring years of hands-on experience and regular government training to their roles. "Ignoring their qualifications and service isn’t fair," it emphasized.
This comes right after the Supreme Court made TET compulsory for all teachers handling Classes 1 to 8—not just new hires, but even those already on the job. The court gave them two years to pass the test. Teachers appointed before TET started in 2011 now face the heat too, and failing it could mean compulsory retirement with basic benefits.
The ruling affects lakhs of educators in government, aided, and private schools across India. However, teachers with less than five years left in service get a break from the test for their current role. But for promotions? They still need to clear TET.
Yogi Adityanath’s decision carries extra weight amid heartbreaking reports of teacher stress in UP. Just last week, two teachers in their 40s and 50s took their own lives, reportedly overwhelmed by the pressure to pass the TET. Their families said the Supreme Court order left them deeply anxious about their future.
By pushing back on the TET mandate for in-service teachers, the UP government hopes to safeguard the careers of dedicated educators who’ve served for years. Stay tuned for updates on this key education policy battle.
