Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of the All India Majlis‑ul‑Watan (AIMIM), slammed the BJP‑run state governments for what he calls “bulldozer justice.” In a recent interview, he warned that the authorities are ignoring the Supreme Court’s clear guidelines on demolishing buildings.
Owaisi said the courts, led by Chief Justice BR Gavai last year, laid down strict rules. The state cannot declare a person guilty, nor can it bulldoze a house without a 15‑day notice served by registered post and posted outside the building. The notice must detail the illegal construction and the reason for demolition, and the demolition itself must be filmed. If these steps aren’t followed, the government could face contempt of court.
He criticized the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) for tearing down entire houses in Bareilly, Karnataka and other states, pointing out that the BJP does not carry out similar demolitions against its own activists. “You can’t run a country with bulldozers; you have to run it with the Constitution and the rule of law,” Owaisi urged.
The debate comes after the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh used bulldozers to clear properties in Bareilly following the “I Love Mohammed” poster controversy. Owaisi called the move tyrannical and reminded that loving the Prophet is a matter of faith. He demanded the UP government release those arrested in connection with the protests, arguing that the government’s actions send a bad message both nationally and abroad.
At the same time, Owaisi raised the case of Ashish Mishra Teni, a BJP minister accused in the Lakhimpur violence incident, and said the government should treat all alleged offenders equally under the law. The Supreme Court’s bulldozer guidelines aim to protect citizens from arbitrary state action and uphold constitutional rights to property and due process.
The protests that triggered the government’s harsh response began when a group of people gathered outside the Ala Hazrat Dargah and the residence of community leader Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan. They held “I Love Mohammad” placards, but the police arrested Maulana Mohsin Raza after the crowd threw stones at officers following Friday prayers. Throughout this controversy, Owaisi has emphasized that India must stand for the rule of law, irrespective of religious or political pressure.
