In Kolkata, police moved quickly after reports that a 15‑year‑old girl was sexually assaulted inside the S.S.K.M Medical College and Hospital. The incident happened in the hospital’s washroom on Wednesday, and authorities arrested the accused that same night.
The youth who was taken into custody is a contractual employee from the nearby N.R.S. Medical College and Hospital. He had previously worked for S.S.K.M, which explains why he was able to enter the building freely after his employment ended.
Police say the victim was coming to the outpatient department for treatment. According to her family, the man pretended to be a doctor, led her to the trauma‑care washroom, and assaulted her. The girl escaped in shock and told her parents what had happened. The Bhabanipur Police Station received the tip‑off and dispatched a team that night, securing the suspect.
The arrested youth faces charges under several clauses of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. He will appear before a lower court in Kolkata on Thursday.
This case follows other recent assaults involving hospital staff in West Bengal, including a police home‑guard who was jailed earlier this week for threatening and physically assaulting a junior doctor in Howrah.
The police investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing how a former employee could access the hospital premises so easily. The incident underscores the need for stronger safeguards to protect children and patients within medical facilities.
