Police in Assam have ramped up their probe into the suspicious death of popular singer Zubeen Garg, arresting two more people linked to the case. On Thursday night, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) picked up co-musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprava Mahanta after days of intense questioning. This brings the total arrests in the Zubeen Garg death investigation to four.
Munna Prasad Gupta, the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and a top CID official, shared details with . He explained that the SIT and CID made the arrests based on solid leads from the interrogations.
Just a day earlier, on Wednesday, the team nabbed Shyamkanu Mahanta, the key organizer behind the North East India Festival in Singapore, along with Zubeen Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma. A local court in Kamrup Metro district ordered 14 days of police custody for both men.
In a major update, the CID has now added murder charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act to the ongoing case, signaling that investigators suspect foul play in the singer’s passing.
It’s been 13 days since Zubeen Garg died while swimming in Singapore. His body was first brought to Delhi and then flown to Guwahati on September 21 via a commercial flight, where thousands mourned the loss of the beloved Assamese artist.
Earlier, on September 27, Assamese actress Nishita Goswami and musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami showed up at the CID office in Guwahati to answer questions about the Zubeen Garg suspicious death probe.
The case, filed under sections 61(2), 105, and 106(1) of the BNS 2023, keeps unfolding as Assam police dig deeper into what happened to the singer in Singapore.
