In Guwahati, a public‑interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday demanding a thorough, impartial investigation into the sudden death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg. The petition, presented by Abhijit Sharma and Palash Ranjan Baruah, accuses the police and festival organisers of irregularities, possible criminal conspiracy and the misuse of official powers.
The petition calls on the High Court to ensure that the probe into Garg’s death remains transparent, free from outside influence and overseen by an independent judge. It points to growing public frustration and a strong demand for accountability from the investigation.
A key point of concern is the alleged involvement of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg. DSP Garg attended the North East India Festival, a cultural event where Garg was scheduled to perform. The petition questions whether DSP Garg had any formal approval or administrative sanction to attend a leisure event that falls outside normal police duties. Officials’ participation could present a real conflict of interest, and the petition urges an independent inquiry into whether any police position was misused.
The lawsuit also highlights the role of Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organiser of the festival. Mahanta is closely connected to influential people in Assam – he is the younger brother of former Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and a current State Chief Information Commissioner. These ties raise fears that Mahanta’s influence could obstruct or bias the investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death. The petition asks the court to consider the potential for interference and to maintain the independence of the probe.
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on Mahanta, who remains in police custody over allegations tied to the singer’s death. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax (IT) Department will soon launch a probe into Mahanta’s financial affairs. He assured that the state government is already coordinating with the central agencies to ensure a professional and transparent investigation.
The Chief Minister added that Mahanta has had a history of building connections with influential figures. “If the photos stored on his mobile become public, they will include politicians, journalists, and many others, but those pictures are irrelevant to the current probe,” he said. “We also have records of people who travelled with him to Bangkok, but those details do not concern this case.”
As the legal process unfolds, the people of Assam and fans of Zubeen Garg watch closely, hoping for a clear, unbiased investigation that brings those responsible for the star’s untimely death to justice.
