On Monday, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the popular singer Zubeen Garg was not killed by accident in Singapore but murdered. His statement at a public event set off a wave of anger among the singer’s fans who are demanding the harshest punishment for the killers.
Sarma told reporters, “I am now convinced that Zubeen Garg’s death was not accidental. He was murdered in Singapore.” He added that the state’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) is working hard to file the chargesheet before the original deadline of December 17. “I have asked the SIT to have it ready by December 8,” he said.
The announcement sparked a strong reaction from the singer’s supporters. On the streets of Assam, fans organized processions and gatherings, chanting for justice. One fan told , “If our beloved Zubeen da was killed, those behind it must be hanged. We want the biggest punishment for the culprits and we urge the government to make sure no one is spared.”
Zubeen Garg, who has been a beloved figure in Assamese and Indian music, died earlier this year in Hong Kong after falling from a balcony. His death has raised questions and speculation, and both supporters and political opponents have called for a thorough, transparent investigation. Now, with Sarma’s claim, the case has taken a sharp turn.
The SIT has been working around the clock. “The chargesheet was scheduled for December 17, but I have told the team to finish it by December 8,” Sarma said. He explained the delay was due to procedural hurdles because the incident happened overseas. “The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) must sign off before we file the chargesheet,” he added.
Sarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi the previous day to speed up the clearance. “The SIT will approach the MHA in the next three or four days, and we expect the chargesheet filed between December 7 and 10,” he said.
The issue has stirred strong emotions in Assam, cutting across political lines and cultural circles. Both the state government and the public are watching closely as the SIT digs into the details of what happened to Zubeen Garg in Singapore.
If the chairman’s claim of murder is proven, it could bring swift justice for the singer’s family and his fans. For now, the public remains on edge, hoping the investigation will bring clarity to a case that has left many in Assam grieving and demanding answers.
