On Monday in Washington, India’s U.S. ambassador Vinay Kwatra sat down with Republican House Representative Jay Obernolte to discuss how the two countries can deepen cooperation in science and technology.
On X, Kwatra posted, “Enjoyed my conversation with Rep. @JayObernolte, Chair of the House Science, Space, and Technology Research and Technology Subcommittee. Highlighted opportunities for stronger US‑India cooperation in science, tech, AI & innovation.”
This meeting follows a string of talks the ambassador has had with Republican congresspeople and chairs of trade‑focused committees. Earlier that week, he met with Jason Smith, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, as well as Vice Chairman Vern Buchanan. After his meeting with Smith, the ambassador posted on X: “Honoured to meet with @WaysandMeansGOP Chairman @RepJasonSmith today – briefed him on India‑US discussions on a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial trade deal. Appreciate his strong support to bilateral trade ties.”
He also spoke with Blake Moore, Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference, and briefed him on the “ongoing India‑US trade talks and other key areas of bilateral collaboration.”
In addition, Kwatra joined a roundtable with experts and analysts from the Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative think tank in Washington.
On X he noted, “Had an excellent roundtable discussion with the experts at the @Heritage Foundation, a strong supporter of the India‑U.S. ties. I shared my thoughts on developments under key pillars of our strategic partnership, including shared economic priorities, a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade arrangement and oil and gas trade.”
The Heritage Foundation is a well‑known think tank often aligned with policies and priorities set by the Trump administration.
Over the past few months, Kwatra has ramped up his engagement, meeting a wide range of Washington stakeholders. These talks arrive just as India and the United States are poised to finalize the first tranche of their trade agreement.
