India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, had productive chats with key American lawmakers on Saturday (Indian time). He focused on boosting India-US bilateral trade, energy ties, and India’s push for a peaceful end to the Ukraine conflict through talks and diplomacy.
Kwatra met separately with Congressman Greg Steube from Florida’s Suncoast region and Congressman James Moylan from Guam. After his discussion with Steube, Kwatra shared on X: “Had the opportunity to speak to Representative Greg Steube—briefed him on issues of mutual interest, including India-US bilateral trade, especially in energy, and spoke about India’s support to all efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy.”
These meetings happen as India and the US restart tariff talks to cut trade barriers and strengthen their economic partnership. On his talk with Moylan, Kwatra posted: “Took the opportunity to brief Representative James Moylan on recent developments in India-US trade partnership and energy cooperation. We also shared views on mutual interests in Indo-Pacific. Reiterated India’s support for the resolution of Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.”
The timing is spot on, following US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement on resuming trade negotiations with India. Trump posted on Truth Social: “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the trade barriers between our two nations.” He called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “very good friend” and said he’s looking forward to speaking with him soon.
PM Modi responded positively on X, saying: “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership.”
These steps show growing momentum in India-US relations, from energy cooperation to Indo-Pacific security and global peace efforts like resolving the Ukraine issue.
