In Santiago on November 27, Indian missions across the globe marked Constitution Day, a day that reiterates their pledge to defend the core values of India’s Constitution. Known nationwide as Samvidhan Divas, the holiday is observed each year on November 26 to remember when the Constituent Assembly adopted the document that took effect on January 26, 1950. The celebration was officially established in 2015 to honour principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity that the Constitution enshrines.
At the embassy in Chile, the festivities began with a dignified reading of the Preamble, followed by two documentaries that explored the making of the Indian Constitution and highlighted B. R. Ambedkar’s vision—the chief architect behind the nation’s founding charter. Indian Ambassador to Chile Abhilasha Joshi, embassy staff, and members of the Indian community gathered to pay tribute to India’s democratic ideals and the enduring spirit of the Constitution.
Across the Atlantic, the Consulate General of India in Atlanta hosted its own Constitution Day event. Speakers included Consul General Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan, Georgia State Representative Matt Reeves, and several distinguished guests. The post on X read:
“They underscored the significance and enduring importance of the Indian Constitution in shaping India’s democracy and governance, while also highlighting its relevance to global conversations on justice, equality, and civic responsibility,”
and noted how these values resonate worldwide. Representative Reeves underlined the shared constitutional principles between India and the United States, emphasizing how both documents uphold democratic ideals, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law. Consul General Lakshmanan spoke of the Constitution as a beacon of inclusivity, praising its role in uniting a vast and diverse nation and inspiring democratic values everywhere.
Meanwhile, the consulate in New York observed SamvidhanDiwas with a formal Preamble reading, reaffirming its unwavering dedication to the constitutional pillars of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. The team also honored B. R. Ambedkar, whose legacy continues to guide India’s democratic journey.
