Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo to boost maritime cooperation and strengthen defence ties between India and Sri Lanka.
Admiral Tripathi kicked off his four-day visit to Colombo on Tuesday. During the talks, the two leaders focused on key areas like maritime security, joint training programs, and building naval capacities.
The Indian Navy shared details on X, highlighting “wide-ranging discussions on the enduring partnership between India and Sri Lanka in the maritime domain.” They reaffirmed their commitment to closer defence cooperation through more operational joint exercises, capacity-building efforts, and participation in events like the International Fleet Review, MILAN naval exercise, and Admiral’s Cup Regatta.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya stressed the ocean’s vital role for maritime nations. She called for joint action to protect this shared resource, pointing to opportunities for deeper teamwork on global threats. These include anti-narcotics operations, illegal and unregulated fishing, marine pollution, and terrorism at sea.
She also pushed for better coordination in search and rescue missions, stronger information sharing, and expanded training between the Indian and Sri Lankan navies.
The Indian Navy described the meeting as a reflection of both countries’ “shared vision” to foster peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean Region through trust and collaboration.
Admiral Tripathi plans to speak at the 12th Galle Dialogue 2025, an international maritime conference. This year’s theme is ‘Maritime Outlook of the Indian Ocean under Changing Dynamics.’
The visit highlights India and Sri Lanka’s ongoing push to deepen defence partnerships and strategic ties, all aimed at ensuring collective security in the Indian Ocean.
