Indian Navy’s Training Squadron Docks in Maputo, Boosting India-Mozambique Ties
The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS) made a splashy arrival in Maputo, Mozambique, on Tuesday. Ships like INS Tir, INS Shardul, INS Sujata, and ICGS Sarathi sailed into port, led by Captain Tijo K Joseph and the Defence Advisor. The Mozambique Navy gave them a hearty welcome, turning this visit into a big deal as both countries mark 50 years of diplomatic relations.
This four-day stopover packs in exciting joint activities to sharpen skills between the two navies. Expect hands-on training in VBSS (Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure) drills, navigation and communication swaps, diving ops, and firefighting plus damage control sessions. The Indian trainees will also tour Mozambique’s defence training units, building better teamwork and understanding on the seas.
The trip wraps up with a PASSEX exercise and a joint patrol of Mozambique’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), showing off their growing maritime cooperation under India’s MAHASAGAR initiative. It’s all about forging stronger bridges of friendship across the Indian Ocean.
While in Maputo, the Senior Officer of 1TS and ship commanders will drop in for courtesy visits with the Chief of the Mozambique Navy, the city’s Mayor, and India’s High Commissioner. To add some fun and warmth, the squadron has lined up yoga sessions, community outreach programs, medical camps, school kids’ visits, and friendly sports matches.
India and Mozambique share a deep bond, with trade roots stretching back centuries before colonial timesālinking western Indian states to this African nation. Today, that history fuels a solid partnership through steady political talks, booming economic ties, and a thriving Indian community in Mozambique, as noted by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
This naval visit highlights how both countries keep strengthening their maritime security and people-to-people connections in the Indian Ocean region.
