India’s Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat made a strong mark at the World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development, known as MONDIACULT 2025, in Barcelona, Spain. The big event, organized by UNESCO on September 29, 2025, gathered ministers and cultural experts from around the globe to map out the future of cultural policies.
Shekhawat took center stage during the plenary session, where leaders adopted rules, set the agenda, and elected key officials. He proudly chaired the session for the Asia-Pacific Group, highlighting India’s rising role in boosting cultural ties across the region.
In a key thematic session on cultural rights and the economy of culture, Shekhawat shared India’s firm dedication to protecting cultural rights. He emphasized how the creative economy can fuel fair and inclusive growth for everyone.
On the conference sidelines, Shekhawat held one-on-one talks with culture ministers from Spain, Iran, Norway, Colombia, and Greece. They focused on ramping up teamwork in areas like heritage conservation, creative industries, museums, and performing arts.
India’s showing at MONDIACULT 2025 underlines its strong push for worldwide cultural conversations, the Ministry of Culture noted in a statement. It positions culture as a vital pillar for sustainable and inclusive development.
As the world’s largest gathering on cultural policy, MONDIACULT 2025 drew thousands of participants. Discussions centered on six main themes and two key focus areas, tackling big challenges and chances ahead for global culture, according to UNESCO.
The conference also serves as a major platform for advocacy. With the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development wrapping up soon, this 2025 UNESCO event aims to rally support and make culture a standalone goal in the next United Nations development plan.
