India’s stealth frigate INS Trikand docked at Italy’s Taranto port on September 28 as part of its ongoing mission in the Mediterranean Sea. The visit highlights the growing defence cooperation and maritime ties between India and Italy, according to the Indian Navy.
During the stop, the crew took part in professional exchanges and cross-deck visits with Italian sailors. These activities focused on sharing best practices and boosting how the two navies work together. Captain Sachin Kulkarni, who commands INS Trikand, met with Rear Admiral Andrea Petroni, head of Italy’s Second Naval Division. The ship has since moved on to the next leg of its deployment, the Navy shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Just a week earlier, on September 21, INS Trikand pulled into Limassol, Cyprus. This port call underscored shared goals for peace, security, and prosperity in the Mediterranean. The crew hosted professional talks, yoga sessions, and cultural exchanges on board. On September 23, the ship opened its doors to local visitors, fostering stronger people-to-people links.
India’s Ministry of Defence noted that the Cyprus visit will ramp up defence and maritime partnerships, including better coordination on security and training programs. It also celebrates the deep friendship and shared values between the two nations.
INS Trikand’s Mediterranean journey kicked off with a stop at Salamis Bay, Greece, on September 13. There, the frigate joined India’s first-ever bilateral maritime exercise with Greece. The drills aimed to sharpen tactical skills, improve interoperability, and build operational teamwork between the navies.
While in Greece, the Indian crew connected with top military leaders through discussions, cross-deck visits, and cultural events to strengthen bilateral bonds. These interactions led straight into the exercise’s sea phase, paving the way for deeper India-Greece cooperation in the region.
