Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited Ahmedabad on Nov. 4 to check on the redevelopment of the city’s main station and the start‑up of the Mumbai‑Ahmedabad high‑speed rail line. He told reporters that the new bullet‑train station is almost finished and the entire project is moving fast.
More than 1,300 railway stations across India are being upgraded this year, and Ahmedabad is among the key sites. Western Railway says the structural frame—two basements and four floors—has nearly wrapped up, and the new elevated road with 38–41 piers and 154–253 girders is already in place. The bullet‑train platform itself is in the advanced stage of construction.
The plan is to merge the conventional train station with the bullet‑train stop so passengers can switch between services without leaving the complex. Three extra platforms will be added, boosting the station’s capacity even further.
The Mumbai‑Ahmedabad corridor, 508 km long, is India’s first bullet‑train line. It is scheduled for service in 2029, while a 50‑km high‑speed stretch between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat should open in 2027. In September, Vaishnaw toured the under‑construction Surat station, noting that the new track and its first turnout were already on site.
On the trains, travelers will cover the distance between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in just about two hours and seven minutes—dramatically slashing the current nine‑hour drive. The project incorporates modern safety tech, such as vibration‑absorbing track pads and protective measures against high winds and earthquakes.
Vaishnaw also confirmed plans for four additional high‑speed corridors in other parts of the country, as outlined in the BJP manifesto, signalling a broader push toward faster, safer rail travel across India.
