Iran’s Foreign Ministry slammed the recent move by France, Britain, Germany—known as the E3—and the United States to bring back old UN Security Council sanctions as completely illegal and without basis. This came just hours after those Iran sanctions snapped back into place on Saturday, a full decade after world powers lifted them under the 2015 nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA.
In a strong statement, the ministry rejected the E3 countries and the US push to revive those outdated UNSC resolutions. Iran pointed out that UN Resolution 2231, which backed the JCPOA back in 2015, already ended those measures. “No new duties fall on UN members, including Iran, from these wiped-out resolutions,” the statement stressed.
Iran urged all nations to ignore this so-called illegal setup, which it says clashes with Resolution 2231. The ministry accused the E3 and the US of twisting the JCPOA’s dispute resolution process and the snapback mechanism to their own ends.
Tehran made it clear: Iran stands ready to protect its rights and national interests. Any steps that threaten them will face a firm and decisive pushback.
This all ties back to a letter Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday. He called the snapback activation a blatant abuse of the rules.
The drama kicked off last month when the E3 formally triggered the snapback clause, which lets UN sanctions return in 30 days if Iran violates the JCPOA. Things heated up at the UNSC: On September 19, a vote to keep sanctions relief going for Iran under the nuclear deal fell flat. Then, on Friday, another resolution for a six-month extension of the JCPOA and Resolution 2231 also failed. That paved the way for the sanctions to snap back that evening.
