In Tehran, Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said the country does not want to talk straight with Washington. He told Al Jazeera that Iran still wants a deal, but it can only happen through indirect talks, not face‑to‑face negotiations, Xinhua reported.
Araghchi reiterated that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful. He said the state cannot stop enriching uranium, and that “what cannot be achieved by war cannot be achieved through politics.” He added that Iran’s 400‑kilogram stockpile of 60 % enriched uranium remains buried under the wreckage of the bombed nuclear sites – it has not been moved elsewhere.
The statement came after the U.S. dropped bombs on three Iranian facilities in Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan on June 22. Araghchi said the attacks destroyed buildings and equipment, but Iran’s technical knowledge stayed intact.
Since early 2024, Iran and the United States have held five rounds of indirect talks about the nuclear program and easing U.S. sanctions. The talks stalled after Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Iranian territory in June, and U.S. forces joined the bombing. The United States has repeatedly demanded that Iran stop enriching uranium on its soil and curb its missile program. Iran has rejected those demands, insisting both issues are non‑negotiable.
For now, Tehran says it wants an agreement but will not open a direct channel with Washington, choosing instead to keep the dialogue indirect to keep the nuclear debate alive.
