Tehran, Oct 20 – Tehran says the UN Security Council’s decision to end Resolution 2231 won’t touch Iran’s basic promises from the 2015 nuclear deal. “Our commitment not to build nuclear weapons stays intact,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told reporters Monday.
Both Resolution 2231 and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) expired on Saturday. Baghaei added that Iran will keep its rights to enrich uranium for peaceful use, even after the UN rules fell off the table. That keeps Iran’s nuclear program under the same limits that the 2015 deal had set.
The Iranian diplomat slammed France, Britain and Germany – the so‑called E3 – for showing little real commitment to talks. He said the trio triggered a “snapback” clause that restored UN sanctions before the resolution had even expired.
Iran has a track record of keeping its JCPOA obligations. It fully respected the deal until the U.S. pulled out in 2018. The U.S. exit, Baghaei argued, hurt the arrangement the most and forced Iran to back down on some of its commitments.
Iran signed the JCPOA in July 2015 with Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States. In return, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program as the U.S. and the world lifted sanctions. When Washington withdrew in May 2018, it re‑imposed sanctions and the UN followed suit after the E3 triggered the snapback mechanism in late August.
With the resolution now void, Tehran made clear that all UN Security Council rules and barriers on its nuclear program are no longer legally binding. The country remains committed to a peaceful nuclear path while keeping its weapons‑free pledge.
