Ramallah – Israeli officials are stopping dozens of Palestinian families from letting their relatives, who were sent to Egypt, return to the West Bank, the head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club said Wednesday. Abdullah al‑Zaghari called the restriction “a systematic policy of collective punishment.”
Some of those deported suffered serious health problems and need regular medical care that only families can provide, he said. Xinhua reported that the prisoners are also in urgent need of family support. Al‑Zaghari urged all parties to end the ban and pointed out that many details about the detainees’ future—whether they might be resettled elsewhere—are still unknown.
Israel moved 383 prisoners to Egypt this year as part of a prisoner‑hostage swap with Hamas. Most of the released men have remained in Egypt since their release. Under the Gaza ceasefire deal, Israel says Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis must stay abroad permanently and can’t return home in the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli authorities have not yet responded to the accusations.
