Israel investigating whether Iran was involved in murder of MIT nuclear prof Nuno Loureiro: report

The Israeli press reports that authorities are now looking into whether Iranian forces were involved in the killing of Prof. Nuno Loureiro, a MIT nuclear‑physics researcher. Loureiro, age 47, was shot to death in his apartment in Brookline, Massachusetts on Monday night. So far investigators in the U.S. have not found any suspects or clear motives.
The Jerusalem Post has said that the Israeli probe was prompted by Loureiro’s work in energy and nuclear physics—subjects that have long attracted Iranian interest. However, the Israeli agency has not yet confirmed the investigation, nor does any U.S. investigator have evidence tying the murder to Tehran or its intelligence services.
The tragedy unfolded at about 8:30 p.m. when a flurry of gunshots rang through the building’s foyer. Loureiro was discovered by neighbors, covered in blood, and rushed to a local emergency department where he later died.
He was a theoretical physicist and fusion specialist who joined MIT in 2016 and became deputy director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center in 2022. Born in Viseu, Portugal, he was appointed to lead the center last year, focusing on clean‑energy research and related projects.
While theories and speculation spread online, local police have not released any suspects or possible motives for the killing.
