The United States says it has struck and destroyed a large drug‑smuggling submarine off the coast of the Caribbean. President Donald Trump posted the news on his Truth Social account on Saturday, describing the vessel as a “very large drug‑carrying submarine” that was heading for the U.S. on a well‑known narcotics route.
The ship, which was reportedly loaded with fentanyl and other drugs, was hit by a U.S. military strike that killed two of the four known “narcoterrorists” on board. The two remaining suspects were captured and sent back to their home countries—Ecuador and Colombia—for detention and prosecution.
Trump said no U.S. military personnel were hurt in the operation. “Under my watch, the United States will not tolerate narcoterrorists trafficking illegal drugs, by land or by sea,” he added. He warned that if the submarine had reached the U.S., up to 25,000 Americans could have died.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro replied on X that the Colombian national involved had been returned and will be prosecuted under the law. “We are glad he is alive,” Petro wrote.
This strike follows a broader U.S. campaign that began in September. At least six vessels, mostly speedboats, have been targeted in the Caribbean, some believed to have ties to Venezuela. The U.S. claims the operation significantly hurts international drug networks but has not yet provided hard evidence linking the 27 people killed in recent strikes to drug trafficking.
The incident highlights the U.S. government’s renewed focus on cutting off the flow of narcotics from Latin America into the United States.
