On Tuesday, India’s top diplomat in Japan, R Madhu Sudan, told an audience in Tokyo that the North‑East region of India is a “frontier of opportunity.” He said the area could become a hub for connectivity, creativity and commerce, and that it offers a model for sustainable, inclusive development that could serve both India and Japan.
The remarks were delivered at a Sasakawa Peace Foundation event called “Exploring the Potential of Northeast India: Harmonizing Cultural Diversity and Socio‑economic Development.” In a tweet from the Indian Embassy in Japan, Sudan called the North‑East a place where culture, commerce and community meet, and said it could help shape a deep partnership between the two countries.
That same day, the embassy also shared photos from a Diwali celebration that took place at Nagasaki University. The event, part of “Diwali Celebrations in Japanese Universities,” lit up the campus with diyas, sweets and traditional Indian music and dance. R Madhu Sudan screened a video message in which he praised the growing friendship and cultural exchanges between India and Japan. The embassy described the evening as “a beautiful reflection of India‑Japan friendship and cultural harmony.”
Students and faculty at Kagawa University also hosted a Diwali celebration. The university posted pictures on X, showing Rangoli designs and Indian sweets. A video from Sudan was shown again to highlight how the festival strengthens ties between the two nations. The embassy noted that such celebrations show the enduring bond of friendship that students and faculty across Japan share with India.
In addition to the cultural events, Sudan held a video call with Isabela Silk, secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Marshall Islands. They discussed potential cooperation in various sectors, including joint projects.
The series of talks and celebrations underscores India’s intention to strengthen ties with Japan, highlight the economic and cultural potential of the North‑East, and build goodwill among international partners.
