Seoul, Oct 9 – Russia, China and Vietnam sent senior leaders to Pyongyang to celebrate North Korea’s Workers’ Party 80th anniversary.
A Russian delegation headed by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday. The Tass news agency said Medvedev is there for the party’s anniversary events.
Vietnam’s top leader, Communist Party chief To Lam, also reached Pyongyang earlier in the day. The Vietnam News Agency noted that this is the first visit by Lam since 2007, and it comes as the two countries mark 75 years of diplomatic ties. Lam met Kim Jong‑un shortly after arriving. They agreed to strengthen cooperation and raise bilateral ties to a higher level, promising more high‑level exchanges among the party, government and regional bodies.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang flew to North Korea on Thursday, according to Xinhua News Agency. Li is attending the anniversary celebrations and making a goodwill visit. The Chinese foreign ministry said his trip will last from Thursday to Saturday, leading a party and government delegation. Li highlighted the deep, historic friendship between the socialist neighbors.
North Korea is expected to stage a large parade on Oct 10, the day of the party’s anniversary. Source reports say the military will display its latest equipment and key commanders will march in the capital.
Kim Jong‑un used the occasion to reinforce party discipline. He warned against “evil practices” such as incompetence, hypocrisy and abuse of power. In a speech at the Party Founding Museum, Kim said the party must eliminate threats to its authority and continue strict discipline. His comments come ahead of the anniversary and aim to consolidate the ruling Workers’ Party’s position.
This wave of visits marks a rare moment of high‑level engagement for North Korea. The presence of Russian, Chinese and Vietnamese leaders signals renewed emphasis on diplomatic cooperation, military exchange and political solidarity in the region.
