Tragic accident in Lisbon: Gloria Funicular derails, 15 dead and 18 injured
A shocking accident has rocked Lisbon as the famous Gloria Funicular, a popular tourist attraction, derailed and overturned. The incident has resulted in the tragic loss of 15 lives, while 18 others are injured. Among those hurt, five are in serious condition, according to local reports from the National Institute of Medical Emergency.
In response to this tragedy, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has canceled a scheduled book festival at Belem Palace, which was set to run from Thursday to Sunday. The president’s office released a statement saying the event was called off “in memory of the victims and in solidarity with their families.”
Many leaders around Europe also expressed their condolences. Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas described the day as “very difficult” and said the city is “fighting hard” to handle the situation. European Union Chief Ursula von der Leyen shared her sadness on social media, writing, “It is with sadness that I learned of the derailment of the famous Elevador da Gloria.”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also voiced his shock, saying he was “appalled by the terrible accident.” He sent his “solidarity” and “wishes for a quick recovery for the injured” to the families of the victims and the Portuguese people. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani met with Lisbon’s Foreign Minister and expressed his “solidarity with the victims.” The United States Embassy in Lisbon also paid tribute, saying they are “heartbroken” and sending “deepest condolences” to everyone affected.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The Portuguese government announced that they will begin their inquiry after rescue efforts are completed. The crash happened near Avenida da Liberdade in central Lisbon. Witnesses at the scene saw firefighters and police cordoning off the area as they carried out rescue operations. The funicular’s carriage was badly damaged, and rescuers worked tirelessly to help those trapped or injured.
Many tourists and locals expressed disbelief about the tragedy. Felipe, a Spanish tourist, said he “never expected such a serious accident to happen at such a famous landmark in Lisbon.” Others shared similar feelings of shock.
Interestingly, this is not the first time something like this has happened. In 2018, a similar derailment occurred, but luckily no one was hurt then. Built in the late 1800s, the Gloria Funicular connects Restauradores Square with the Principe Real district. Its bright yellow carriages run along steep hills and attract thousands of tourists every year, making it one of Lisbon’s most well-known landmarks.
As rescue operations continue, officials and residents alike are mourning this tragic event. The focus now is on helping the victims and understanding what caused this deadly accident.
