Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday he will attend the 47th ASEAN‑India Summit in Kuala Lumpur virtually, as India celebrates Diwali. In a call with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Modi congratulated his friend on Malaysia’s new seat as ASEAN Chair and expressed excitement about deepening the ASEAN‑India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The summit will run from Oct 26‑28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. More than 30 heads of state and government will attend, including leaders from the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The event will focus on regional peace, economic resilience and inclusive growth under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme, “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
Both leaders talked about boosting trade, investment and cooperation in technology, education and security. Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that India remains a key partner for Malaysia in all of these sectors. He also noted that Modi’s virtual role in the summit is a tribute to the Diwali celebrations happening across India.
Modi posted on X that he enjoyed a warm conversation with his friend Anwar, congratulating him on the chairmanship and wishing the summit success. “Looking forward to joining the ASEAN‑India Summit virtually and to a deeper comprehensive partnership,” he added.
Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to strengthen ties with India and to enhance ASEAN‑India cooperation toward a “peaceful and prosperous region.” The summit will close on Oct 28 with a handover ceremony, passing the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines.
The gathering makes Malaysia Malaysia’s diplomatic hub for the duration of the event and underlines the nation’s growing influence in Southeast Asia. The virtual attendance of PM Modi and the high‑level dialogue with Anwar Ibrahim symbolize a fresh push for stronger ties between India and ASEAN, especially amid the festive Diwali backdrop in India.
