Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam wrapped up his eight-day state visit to India with a warm meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. On Tuesday, he called on President Droupadi Murmu to chat about the strong bonds between India and Mauritius—bonds built on shared history, language, culture, and values that make their relationship truly special.
The visit, which ran from September 9 to 16, took Ramgoolam and his delegation to bustling spots like Mumbai, the spiritual hubs of Varanasi and Ayodhya, and the sacred Tirupati. President Murmu welcomed him with open arms, highlighting how Mauritius holds a key spot in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, the ‘MAHASAGAR Vision’, and New Delhi’s push for the Global South.
She was thrilled to see India-Mauritius ties growing stronger in every area, from trade to tech. Just recently, they upgraded to an ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership’, which is a big win. “India stands by Mauritius’s development goals,” the President said, pointing to a new Special Economic Package that covers hospitals, roads, port upgrades, defence deals, and joint surveillance. These projects will boost infrastructure and improve daily life for Mauritians in the years ahead. Plus, they’re teaming up in fresh fields like digital tech and space exploration.
Both leaders agreed their connection runs deep, thanks to those common roots. With Ramgoolam’s vast experience as a leader, President Murmu is confident India-Mauritius bilateral relations will only get tighter.
Before the presidential meet, Ramgoolam had a productive chat with Vice President C P Radhakrishnan at the Vice-President’s Enclave. They focused on ramping up trade, economic links, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
Earlier that day, the Mauritius PM paid heartfelt tributes in New Delhi. He visited Rajghat to honor Mahatma Gandhi and stopped by Sadaiv Atal to remember former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Ramgoolam arrived in the capital late Monday night after a spiritual stop at Tirumala Temple in Tirupati, where he prayed alongside his wife, Veena Ramgoolam.
One of the visit’s highlights came on September 12 in Ayodhya. Ramgoolam, with his wife and a 30-member delegation, offered prayers at the grand Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple. He became the second world leader—after Bhutan’s Prime Minister—to worship Ram Lalla there. The couple performed aarti, spent about 30 minutes in devotion, and even checked out the ongoing temple construction.
Last week in Varanasi, Ramgoolam prayed at the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, joined by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared photos on X, noting how the visit shows the “deep cultural and civilizational bonds that unite India and Mauritius.”
On September 11, he soaked in the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti on Varanasi’s ghats. That same day, Ramgoolam met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review all angles of India-Mauritius cooperation, from economy to security.
This state visit underscores the unbreakable India-Mauritius friendship, blending history, faith, and future goals for mutual growth.
