Mauritius PM Ramgoolam meets FS Vikram Misri, discusses multifaceted bilateral partnership

India-Mauritius Ties Strengthen in Varanasi: PM Ramgoolam Meets Foreign Secretary Misri
In the historic city of Varanasi, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam held talks with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Thursday. The leaders focused on boosting the strong India-Mauritius partnership, built on shared history, culture, and close people-to-people links.
The Ministry of External Affairs shared on X: "Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called on PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius today in Varanasi. Discussed multifaceted partnership and reaffirmed commitment in strengthening India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership anchored in shared history, culture & people-to-people ties."
Ramgoolam is in the middle of an eight-day visit to India, and he’s spending time in Varanasi to chat with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their goal? Take the Enhanced Strategic Partnership between India and Mauritius to the next level.
Meanwhile, PM Modi landed in his home turf of Varanasi to a hero’s welcome. BJP supporters lined the streets, showering flowers on his convoy as he headed to the Taj Hotel for key bilateral discussions with Ramgoolam. The city buzzes with excitement—streets decked out in decorations and elaborate setups for this high-profile India-Mauritius meeting.
These talks in Varanasi spotlight the deep civilisational bonds, spiritual connections, and lasting friendships that define India-Mauritius relations. The two leaders will review all areas of cooperation, putting extra emphasis on development projects and building local skills.
Expect discussions on fresh opportunities in healthcare, education, science and technology, energy, and infrastructure. They’ll zoom in on renewable energy, digital public tools, and the blue economy—key areas for growth in the Indian Ocean region.
This meeting follows the positive vibes from PM Modi’s March visit to Mauritius, where both countries upgraded their ties to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. As a key maritime neighbor, Mauritius supports India’s big visions like MAHASAGAR for regional security and growth, plus the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. Their partnership also boosts goals for the Global South.
The Varanasi Summit could mark a big step forward in India-Mauritius relations, pushing for shared prosperity, green development, and a safer, more inclusive future.
Just a day earlier, at a business event in Maharashtra, Ramgoolam called the India-Mauritius bond unbreakable. He said Mauritius stands as India’s most trusted partner, with tons of business potential ahead.
This isn’t Ramgoolam’s first big India trip—he joined PM Modi’s 2014 swearing-in as the only non-SAARC leader invited. Fun fact: India set up diplomatic ties with Mauritius way back in 1948, even before the island nation gained independence in 1968.
The Ministry of External Affairs notes that this relationship thrives on top-level trust, mutual respect, and steady political exchanges. It’s a partnership that’s only getting stronger.
